What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is a common term that describes an injury to your neck that usually occurs as a result of a motor vehicle or car accident or some other type of violent impact to your body. The rear impact, or getting “rear-ended”, is the most common type of car accident where the driver and passengers in the vehicle are at the greatest risk for a neck injury, including whiplash. Whiplash needs immediate local chiropractic treatment.
Whiplash injuries are very complex and usually include a variety of related problems. Joint dysfunction, due to whiplash in one of the joints, like the neck or spine may lose its normal resiliency and flexibility, which leads to a restricted range of movement and neck pain.
Disc herniation from a whiplash accident can lead to small tears of the outer edge of the disc and can cause the inner core of the disc to bulge through these tears, which would be the herniation of the disc. If the disc's inner core touches a spinal nerve root it may irritate it, causing numbness, pain, and weakness in the extremities (arms, legs, feet, and hands). A herniated disc can cause sharp and shooting pain, will include sharp, shooting pain up and down your arms and hands. It may also lead to tingling, numbness, and weak muscles.
The high number of pain signals from Whiplash type of injuries, also causes your muscles to stiffen. If left untreated, these injuries over time can lead to chronic pain and may result in some minor muscle strains, sprains, spasms, and long term injuries.
What causes whiplash?
Whiplash is most commonly caused by a car accident in which the person is in the vehicle that is not moving, and is impacted from behind by another car. The rear impact causes the drivers and passengers head and neck to be abruptly hyper-extend backwards as the vehicle pushes the person's body forward and the unsupported head and neck are whipped first back and then forwards.
After an accident, such as a rear impact collision, the muscles of the neck will tighten, which will lead to abnormal positions of the spine. As see in most cases of whiplash, the cervical spine muscles will guard and cause the neck to be become straight, causing it to lose its normal lordotic curvature. It is thought that this abnormal motion caused by the whiplash leads to damage to the ligaments and muscles that hold the cervical vertebrae together leading to neck dysfunction and pain.
Chiropractic Whiplash Treatment
Each person’s case of whiplash is usually different, so the chiropractic whiplash treatment is unique to each whiplash injury. However, chiropractors commonly execute the following chiropractic treatments for whiplash; chiropractic manipulation, muscle relaxation and/or stimulation, various exercises and ergonomic lifestyle changes.
The primary whiplash treatment for joint dysfunction from whiplash is spinal manipulation, which involves the chiropractor gently moving the involved joint into the direction in which it is restricted. This is also known as a chiropractic adjustment, spinal manipulation may involve the application of short thrusts and slow mobilizing movements.
The chiropractor's primary whiplash treatment for muscle dysfunction consists of controlled stretches to the muscles that have excessive tension. If the muscle is very tight, then a stronger stretch may be applied.

Decompression Table Therapy
Spinal Decompression Therapy involves stretching the spine while using a traction table to relieve your back and neck pain. Spinal decompression tables use the same basic principle of traditional manual adjustments that have been offered by chiropractors for many years.
Spinal decompression treatment relieves back and neck pain, and creates healing environment for bulging, herniated, or degenerating discs. This optimal healing environment create the right amount of pressure to encourage retraction or repositioning of the herniated or bulging disc. This lower pressure in the disc will allow healing nutrients and other substances into the disc.
In spinal decompression therapy, the spine is relaxed and stretched intermittently in a very calculated and controlled manner.
Chiropractor Laser Therapy
Laser therapy is a FDA cleared non-invasive chiropractic technique to help reduce upper back and neck pain and inflammation. Deep tissue laser therapy speeds up your body’s own organic healing process through “photo-bio-stimulation”. These chiropractic lasers work by filling the targeted tissue with photons that energize cells resulting in an increased circulation and pain reduction to the injured area.
Laser therapy treatments must be applied directly to skin which will cause you to feel a soothing warmth sensation as the therapy is administered. This therapy will last between 5 and 10 minutes, it will trigger an 18-24 hour process of modulated cellular activity, which will lead to the decreased pain and inflammation.
